STEELS in Your Schoolyard: Teaching Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Through Place-Based Learning

  • Audience: K-12 classroom teachers, preservice teachers, and nonformal educators.
  • Credits: Six Act 48 continuing education hours will be provided for Pa. Certified Teachers.
  • Cost: Free.
  • MWEE Designation: Pa. Certified MWEE Ambassador.

Join the CAIU and Chesapeake Bay Foundation to transform your schoolyard into a powerful learning space where students can investigate, explore, and understand their local environment. In this hands-on workshop, educators will learn how to design and implement Environmental Literacy and Sustainability (ELS)-focused experiences that meet the Pennsylvania STEELS standards. Participants will explore strategies for connecting students to their local ecosystem, designing investigations that matter to their community, and fostering student action. You’ll leave with practical tools and a plan for bringing STEELS-aligned environmental learning outside.
